How To Use Charitable’s Fee Relief

With Charitable Fee Relief, you can allow your donors to cover the processing fees when they donate.

It’s easy and requires zero coding – just a few clicks.

You can also fine-tune the processing fees by setting a fixed fee per donation, calculating the fee as a percentage, or through a mixture of both. This allows you to tweak your settings so that the extra fee your donor pays exactly matches the fee that you will be charged by your payment processor.

For example, if your payment processor charges you 2.9% + ¢30 per donation, you can configure Fee Relief to charge exactly that.

Of course, different gateways charge different fees, so Fee Relief allows you to configure how the fees are calculated on a per-campaign basis. You can also keep Fee Relief disabled for particular gateways:

How to Customize Fee Relief Settings

Once you have activated Fee Relief, go to Charitable » Settings » Advanced » Fee Relief.

Fee relief in settings

On this page, you’ll see a number of settings. We’ll walk through each one.

Setting Fee Relief for Each Gateway

By default, Fee Relief is enabled for all gateways but the amount or percentage is not set. You can enable and disable Fee Relief for gateways as you wish using the button available on the right.

Fee relief options

Next, you can set a fee as a combination of a percentage and a fixed amount per donation. These settings are designed to correspond to the way many payment gateways set their fees.

For example, PayPal commonly charges 2.9% and ¢30 per donation. To cover the PayPal fee, then, you would enter 2.9 in the “Fee %” field and 0.30 in the “Fixed amount per donation” field.

Choosing The Fee Relief Mode

Fee Relief has four different modes of integrating with your donation form, and the mode can be changed on a per-campaign basis.

By default, Fee Relief will add a checkbox to your donation forms to allow donors to cover the processing fees. This can be set to be checked or unchecked by default.

The 4 modes you can use include:

  • Disabled: Fee Relief is not enabled on campaigns by default. Enable it for specific campaigns via the campaign settings.
  • Opt-in checkbox, not checked by default: Show an un-checked checkbox in the donation form. The donor must deliberately check the box to pay the processing fees.
  • Opt-in checkbox, checked by default: Show a checked checkbox in the donation form. Unless the donor un-checks the box, they will pay the processing fees.
  • Automatic opt-in: Automatically add the processing fees onto the donation total, without displaying a checkbox in the donation form. The donor cannot opt-out of paying the processing fees.

This can be changed on a per-cmapaign basis. We’ll show you how to do that in the next section.

Deciding Fee Relief Calculation

Charitable makes it easy to decide what kind of formula you want to use.

You can choose:

Subtotal + Fixed/Percentage – This is the default setting

Fixed + (Subtotal * Percentage)

Fee relied formula

With a $1000 donation, 2.9% fee, and a $0.30 fee the default formula would result in a fee of $30.18, the alt option a fee of $29.30.

Changing Fee Relief in Individual Campaign Settings

Open any campaign in the campaign builder, and go to the Settings » Fee Relief tab. In case you haven’t enabled it, you’ll see an option to enable Fee Relief here.

Next, you can choose your Fee Relief mode. This mode will apply only to this campaign.

Finally, you can keep Fee Relief disabled site-wide and only enable it for particular campaigns.

The choice is yours.

Make sure you hit the Save button at the top-right corner of the screen.

That’s it. You now know how to use Fee Relief in Charitable. For more about this feature, visit the Fee Relief feature page »

Improvement Payments

💰 Accept Recurring Donations with Windcave and Charitable

A donor sets their gift up once on Windcave’s secure payment page, and Charitable bills every renewal after that on schedule. Why this is important:

🏦 Organizations banked in New Zealand or Australia: monthly giving on the gateway your bank already set you up with, with no second processor to onboard.
⛪ Churches taking regular tithes and offerings: congregants set their own schedule once, which is the simplest way to launch recurring church giving without a separate platform.
🌏 Groups with donors in several currencies: Windcave handles more than 20, so a supporter can give in the currency they actually hold.
📅 Operating funds rather than one-time campaigns: switch on Recurring Only mode and the one-off option disappears, so every gift to that campaign is a subscription.
🧾 Teams with no developer on staff: 3 sets of credentials pasted into a settings page, and no code anywhere.

automation update

⚡ Visual Automation Builder: Drag and Drop With No Code!

Charitable Automation Connect 2.3.0 introduces the Visual Automation Builder, a full-screen canvas that lays each automation out as a flow of connected cards: a trigger, optional conditions, and a list of actions that run in order.

🧩 Many actions, one trigger: Tag a donor, send an email, add a note, and fire a webhook from a single event, dragged into any order.

✉️ Act inside Charitable: New Send Email, Tag Donor, and Add Donor Note actions run with no external service required.

🔤 Merge tags: Personalize emails and notes with live fields like {first_name}, {total}, and {campaign_name}.

🔁 Apply to existing donors: Run Tag Donor and Add Donor Note against the donors you already have.

🖥️ Canvas or Simple: Switch views anytime, and automations built before 2.3.0 keep working unchanged.
