Giving Land Back to Nature, One Parcel at a Time
In Schleswig-Holstein, in the far north of Germany, a small stretch of moorland near the village of Oering is being left alone on purpose. No timber crews, no fertilizer, no grazing schedule. eMission-X bought the land specifically to do nothing with it, and let it become wild again.
eMission-X gGmbH is a German nonprofit founded in 2023 with one focused mission: buy land that is currently farmed, forested, or otherwise used for economic production, and take it out of commercial use permanently. Once the necessary initial restoration work is done, the organization steps back entirely and lets natural processes take over.
That approach sets eMission-X apart from conservation efforts that lease land for a fixed term or manage a habitat toward a specific target. There is no end state they are steering toward. Deadwood can stay where it falls, water tables can rise back to their natural level, and vegetation can return however it returns.
The organization’s founder, Till Mertens, built eMission-X around a simple argument: protecting biodiversity takes more than planting trees or offsetting emissions elsewhere. It takes giving nature something increasingly scarce, which is space, time, and freedom from human intervention.
Rewilding Wusseken and a 100-Hectare Goal
eMission-X currently holds land in two places, Oering in Schleswig-Holstein and Zeitz in Sachsen-Anhalt. One of its sites, Rewilding Wusseken, was named one of Germany’s Top 10 projects for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration in 2026. It received recognition for permanently securing land and letting natural processes take over rather than managing it toward a fixed outcome.

The team’s goal is to grow its holdings to 100 hectares of permanently protected land within five years. Every new parcel is bought outright, not leased, so the protection does not expire when a grant cycle or a lease term ends.
People, families, and companies can take part directly in that work through a few different programs.
- Nature Sponsorships: individuals can sponsor a plot of land, starting from 30 square meters, for a ten-year period.
- Family Forest Packages: families can support a dedicated piece of forest land being returned to wild growth.
- Corporate Forest Ownership: companies can fund the permanent protection of a forest area as part of their own sustainability commitments.
- Agroforestry Partnerships: landowners work with eMission-X to combine food-producing trees with long-term ecological restoration.
One current project is a moor near Klein Breesen, where eMission-X is raising funds for a hydrology survey and a restoration plan before any work on the ground begins. Moorland stores carbon far more effectively than forest when it is wet, so getting the water levels right before doing anything else is the whole point.
eMission-X is also a member of 1% for the Planet, the Biodiversity Credit Alliance, and the Global Rewilding Alliance. It works inside a wider international rewilding movement rather than treating each land purchase as an isolated project.
Why Permanent Protection Matters
Land that is only protected for a lease term or a grant cycle can be returned to farming or forestry once that period ends. Land that eMission-X buys does not go back. That permanence is the core of the organization’s argument: nature needs decades, not seasons, to fully recover, and it can only get that time if the land is no longer for sale.
