Learn how to make the most of Charitable with clear, step-by-step instructions.

Translating Charitable

If you would like to translate Charitable into your language, there are several ways you can do so.

translate.wordpress.org

You can give back to the Charitable project by contributing your translations at translate.wordpress.org.

Once a translation has reached 100% translations in the Development / Stable columns, it automatically becomes available to anyone using Charitable in that language.

Contributing

  1. Log into your WordPress.org account.
  2. Click on the Development cell for the language you are translating.
  3. There are serveral ways you can filter/sort the list of translateable text, but one easy way to get started is to click on the Untranslated link.
  4. To translate a particular piece of text, double-click on the row and add your translation.

When you add translations, by default they will go into the Waiting list, where they can be approved by a translation editor.

Becoming a Translation Editor

If you are interested in becoming a translation editor for Charitable in your language, that’s possible too! As a translation editor, you can help guide the translation of Charitable into your language. You will be able to approve/reject suggested translations and contribute your own without requiring approval. You can also write translations using a program like Poedit (see below) and then upload the translations, which can be a faster way of completing the translation.

If you are interested, please get in touch with us. You will need to provide us with your WordPress.org username.

WordPress Dashboard

Weglot

You can translate Charitable using a plugin called Weglot.

  1. Go to Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for “Weglot”.
  3. Click Install Now.
  4. On the following screen, click Activate Plugin.

You’ll need to create a Weglot account. You’ll get an API key that connects your WordPress site to the Weglot service.

Next, navigate to the Weglot section of your WordPress Dashboard and configure the following settings in the Main configuration screen.

  • Copy and paste the API key you received into the API Key text box.
  • Select the Original language of your charity website. This is the language your originally publish content in e.g. English.
  • Choose the languages that you wish to translate your website’s content into from the Destination languages section. Here’s a complete list of available languages to choose from.

When you’re done, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen to proceed. Weglot will now automatically translate all of your website’s content – including content generated by themes and plugins – into your chosen destination language(s).

For more information about using Loco Translate, see its documentation.

Note: To avoid losing your translations when you upgrade to new versions of Charitable, we strongly recommend creating the following folder in your website (it must also be writeable by your server):

wp-content/languages/plugins

Poedit

You may prefer to translate Charitable via Poedit, which is a free downloadable program designed to make it easy to create translations. To translate Charitable using Poedit:

  1. Open the charitable/i18n/languages/charitable.pot file in Poedit.
  2. Write your translations.
  3. Save the file with your language code to wp-content/languages/plugins/charitable-nl_NL.po, replacing nl_NL with the language code for your translation (Poedit will suggest this).
