Marine Life Sanctuaries Society
Protecting the marine ecosystems
The Marine Life Sanctuaries Society (MLSS) is a passionate community of volunteers, scientists, divers, and engaged locals dedicated to protecting the fragile marine ecosystems of Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound in British Columbia.
Since its founding in 1990 and rebranding in 1993, MLSS has been at the forefront of marine conservation efforts, playing a pivotal role in discovering, mapping, and preserving most of the sponge reefs in the area, leading to the establishment of 13 Marine Refuge Conservation Areas and the protection of Whytecliff Park as a marine conservation zone.
Protecting Marine Life Through Science and Stewardship
Marine Life Sanctuaries Society believes that fully protecting marine life means no extraction of any organisms within designated sanctuaries.
These no-take marine protected areas allow ocean habitats to recover naturally. With no fishing or harvesting, ecosystems have the chance to rebuild, which also helps improve the health of surrounding waters. Their work is guided by science, including monitoring rockfish populations (especially young-of-the-year), tracking lingcod egg masses, recording temperature changes and documenting fragile glass sponge habitats.
These projects rely heavily on trained citizen scientists who contribute thousands of volunteer hours. Together, they form a growing community of marine stewards committed to protecting and restoring the ocean.
Education and Community Engagement
MLSS goes beyond conservation to actively engage the public through their renowned Beach Interpretative Program and outreach efforts that educate about marine ecosystems’ complexities and the importance of stewardship.
They empower community members to observe and report illegal fishing through education rather than policing, reinforcing respect for existing conservation regulations.
This collaborative spirit between government bodies, First Nations, and the community remains key to advancing marine protections across British Columbia.
The Mission and Vision
MLSS’s mission is clear: to make the world a better place by securing more no-take marine sanctuaries where marine life can thrive safely.
Their vision includes a future where education, passion, and science work together to foster understanding and support for marine conservation.
Protecting critical habitats like sponges and rockfish assures healthier oceans for generations to come.
