Let’s Talk Access

Closing Mental Health Literacy Gap Through Stories

In British Columbia, a troubling paradox exists: the province has the highest mental health hospitalization rates in Canada, yet massive gaps remain in helping people access care. The problem isn’t that people don’t want help—it’s that no one teaches them how to navigate the mental health system, understand different therapy models, or know what’s right for them.

Let’s Talk Access, in partnership with the Fernwood Community and Arts Association, exists to bridge this critical pre-therapy gap.

Through arts, education, and conversation, they work to make mental-health understanding and support accessible to everyone – reducing stigma, strengthening community connection, and helping people find belonging and tools for wellbeing.

Together, they aim to make mental-health literacy a community art form – something lived, shared, and accessible to all.

The Lets Talk Access Podcast

What started as Season 1, a raw and honest documentary following three participants struggling to access mental health care, revealed a hidden system gap recognized by thousands. With two-thirds of participants entering therapy successfully and listeners declaring it “what I wish I had before I started,” the project gained momentum.

Season 2 will expand this impact through a 12-week trauma-informed group, an extensive podcast series, and a free Access Guide, creating public infrastructure designed to equip people with emotional literacy, consent skills, and navigation know-how, reducing dropouts and wasted referrals.

Why Now Matters

British Columbia has the highest mental health hospitalization rates in Canada. People are in crisis, navigating an unregulated system without tools or guidance. The gap between needing help and accessing appropriate care is widening.

Let’s Talk Access has the model, the proof of concept, and the community partnerships. What they need now is the resources to scale – to transform this from a powerful pilot into a replicable blueprint that can serve communities across Canada and beyond.

This is about more than one podcast season or one cohort. It’s about building public infrastructure for mental health literacy – ensuring that when someone reaches out for help, they have the knowledge and power to find care that actually serves them.

Why This Approach Is Different

Let’s Talk Access isn’t creating another referral service or therapy app. They’re building something more fundamental:

🌉 Filling the Gap
Closing the pre-therapy gap in a way no one else addresses—through real people, real stories, and real voices learning together.

🛠️ Creating Tools, Not Dependency
Centering literacy over reliance, equipping people with the confidence and knowledge to choose for themselves.

💡 Lower-Cost, Higher-Impact Technology
Using lightweight, affordable storytelling tools instead of costly, locked-down digital platforms.

⚡ Creating Knowledge in Real-Time
Co-creating with lived experience: the group generates insight on the spot, shared through a 24-episode podcast and free Access Guide that becomes a public resource.

How You Can Help

Donate Directly
Every contribution fuels care, tools, and education the system doesn’t provide. It takes 43,000 people contributing $5 each to reach the goal.

Sponsor the Work
Businesses, individuals, and organizations can sponsor podcast episodes, participant cohorts, or wellness resources. Put your name on change while helping cover real operational costs.

Invest in the Model
This isn’t charity, it’s backing an equity model that creates lasting resources. Support with funding or networks to help close the pre-therapy gap at scale.

Contribute In-Kind
Donate items or services, support fundraising auctions, purchase offerings, or organize fundraisers. Every contribution strengthens the infrastructure keeping access alive.
